Help In Making Denture Implants More Affordable!

by Thom Richards

Look in your local newspaper. Hardly a day goes by that there isn't an ad for dental, or denture implants.. Usually, the ad shows someone in a "before photo" with crooked uneven teeth, and smile. Then you see an "after the procedure photo"; this same person who now has perfectly straight teeth and a gorgeous smile.
Is this false advertising? No! Believe it, or not with today's advanced cosmetic dental procedures these results can be easily achieved with dental implants.
Just exactly what are dental or denture implants?
First they implant a small metallic device into the jaw bone (like a screw). In turn, a false tooth (mini-implant), or even a set of false teeth can be anchored onto these devices. What is important is that there is enough healthy jaw bone to safely anchor the metallic devices.
Most people think of false teeth (dentures) as something that are removable from your mouth, and that you set aside at night. In this process, dentures that are anchored to the metallic implants are permanent and not removable.

Unfortunately, dental implant procedures are not particularly affordable. They start out in the $1,200 per tooth range, and the cost spirals upwards depending upon whether or not regeneration of your jawbone is needed. And, for other physical problems that might interfere with a successful dental implant.
Unfortunately, dental or denture implants are considered cosmetic dentistry and most dental insurance companies will not cover them. Fortunately, with what is called a discount dental plan, you can save ten to sixty percent on dental procedures including denture implants.
Are discount dental plans a solution in helping make denture implants more

Basic Dental Hygiene Prevents Larger, More Expensive Problems

by Donovan Baldwin

We hear a lot about the value of practicing "good dental hygiene", but it is often assumed that we already know what that means. Even more, we tend to assume that we know what the results of such a regular practice is going to be.
Most of us only go so far as to think about the condition of our teeth, however, and perhaps our personal appearance. Occasionally, we may also give some thought to the fact that if we took better care of our teeth, we would have fewer visits to the dentist. We understand at some level that we would not require such drastic dental procedures as fillings, extractions, and root canals. We realize, at least to some extent, that we would possibly look and feel better...not to mention experience less pain...were our dental hygiene habits a little better. We can even grasp that the actual expense of after-the-fact dental procedures will be much greater than the cost associated with just keeping our teeth and gums healthy on a day-to-day basis.
However, most of us never put the whole package together and realize the total impact that neglecting basic dental hygiene can have on us. Not only will our wallets and jaws be impacted, time taken from our daily activities either as we perform our daily required dental care, or as we visit the dentist later to correct the conditions which developed as a result of our negligence. Even worse, we will probably experience unnecessary pain, ill-health, and possible early death, or at least debilitating conditions, as a result of not doing the few simple and relatively inexpensive steps which would take care of the situation before it has a chance to occur.
THE OBVIOUS RESULTS OF POOR DENTAL HYGIENE
Obviously, for most of us, poor dental hygiene leads to cavities (dental caries). Cavities are holes in the teeth which need to be filled by a dentist. From a cost point of view, filling a cavity can cost anywhere from $100 on up. Some particular situations and solutions can cost as much as $1,000 or even more.
Some teeth will be in very bad shape, but can be saved by means of a root canal. The cost of a root canal can be in the high hundreds, and possibly in the thousands of dollars. Some teeth which cannot be saved will have to be extracted. A ballpark cost for tooth extraction is between $75 and $150, although special situations and complications could run that cost even higher, of course.

Not only is there the cash cost of the dental procedures to consider, but there will usually be pain associated with the condition as well. Many of these situations could be prevented by regular, basic dental hygiene steps, thus saving both money and discomfort. Sometimes these situations, and/or the procedure used to correct them, may affect the individual's appearance, thus negatively impacting their own self image and self esteem. Additionally, if someone has been neglecting the care of their teeth, gums, and mouth, then several teeth may be impacted, creating even more cost in terms of money, pain, and perhaps lowered self esteem.
MORE HEALTH ISSUES RELATED TO POOR DENTAL HYGIENE
For some time, dental health care providers have been aware that diseases and conditions of the mouth, teeth, and gums could contribute to some other health issues. Recent studies have not only confirmed this knowledge but has broadened it as well. Without going into detail here, suffice it to say that poor dental hygiene has now been linked to many diseases and debilitating conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and even cancer.
A life filled with disease and pain and all the types of costs associated with that can be the result of neglecting to take a few simple, and relatively inexpensive, steps towards a healthy mouth and gums.
STEPS FOR HEALTHY DENTAL HYGIENE
Regular Brushing and Flossing - One of the first steps someone can take on the road to proper dental hygiene is quite simply to brush their teeth at least twice a day and to floss once a day. While it is recommended by some to brush in the morning and before bed, it could be of value to at least squeeze it in somewhere in the day. Flossing removes the plaque which builds up around teeth. Plaque will eventually lead to tooth decay, and removing it regularly is a major step in the prevention of cavities which will need to be filled or even teeth which will need to be extracted or be saved by a root canal.
Use a Toothpaste Containing Fluoride - Such toothpastes will help prevent the growth of plaque while strengthening the enamel of the tooth itself. Mouthwashes with fluoride and plaque-preventing ingredients may help as well.
Avoid Sugar - This tip could be included in a great many articles. Not only does sugar help promote the growth of plaque, but it also contributes to unnecessary weigh gain. Since over 65% of the adult population of America is overweight, cutting sugar from our diets could have a double whammy in favor of good health
Avoid Tobacco - While smoking and chewing may or may not have any direct effect on the teeth themselves, tobacco products can contribute to diseases of the gums and mouth, including oral cancer.
Visit Your Dentist Regularly - A dentist can spot a developing cavity or other condition before it becomes a big, expensive problem. Bad things may be happening in your mouth, or your child's mouth, that you may not be aware of, but the dentist can discern and possibly take steps to correct. The dentist's office will also commonly offer a cleaning that will be far better than what you can normally do at home yourself.
Even if you skip all the other steps, visiting your dentist a couple of times a year just for a checkup and cleaning could go a long way to keeping your teeth, gums, and mouth in a healthy condition.
THE COST OF VISITING THE DENTIST
It is assumed by most people that visiting the dentist is both painful and expensive. However, the cost of a regular checkup is nothing compared to the costs associated with fillings, extractions, root canals, and related dental health care. Those who are lucky enough to have some sort of dental health care benefits, either through dental insurance or a prepaid dental health care plan, may find that their benefits include regular checkups and cleanings that are either free or relatively inexpensive.
IN SUMMATION
The cost of poor dental hygiene can be great, the cost of good dental hygiene is small in comparison. However, the results of proper dental care can be a return which is much greater than the costs involved. Take care of your teeth for good health, good appearance, and a life less endangered by ill-health and pain.

Holistic Dentistry Comes of Age

by Zach Grillis

With the advent of holistic medicine and natural health in the western world it only makes sense that dentistry profession be a part of it. Rather than focus on one area of a person's body, holistic dentistry is concerned with the patient's overall health. Holistic dentistry is based on the same notion that what affects the mouth affects the body, and vice versa. Our bodies are a system and should be treated that way instead of just a group of parts.
For instance, one point of difference for a holistic dentist may be their treatment of toxic silver mercury fillings. Mercury is known to have long term negative effects on our body. So if someone needs work on a filling, even having it removed and replaced with a safer alternative, a holistic dentist would take precautions to ensure that you are not exposed to any gases emitted during and procedure an that you don't end up swallowing any either. A holistic dentist makes sure the water from his office is filtered of these hazardous waste products before they reach the municipal water system.

Material compatibility testing helps those patients concerned with a reaction to certain dental materials. A holistic dentist will do extensive tests to determine what materials are the most biocompatible.
This is a particular concern for people who have any potential sensitivities and are planning cosmetic dentistry work. Cosmetic dentists make porcelain, veneers, inlays, crowns and other restorations to give you that perfect smile!
Obviously finding someone trained in both cosmetic dentistry and holistic dentistry can offer you the best of both worlds.

New Dental Teeth Whitening Techniques Bring Brighter Smiles

by Jordan Heften

It really wasn't all that long ago that people with discolored teeth had to just put up with their predicament and try to keep a smile on their face through it all. It was only a generation ago that all that was really available to brighten a smile was a basic teeth cleaning treatment, that did help somewhat.
Now however, there is a virtual litany of choices available for someone that desires the brightest and whitest smile possible. Couple that with the ready availability of new cosmetic dentistry procedures for repairing minor defects, such as bonding, that require only one visit and its easy to see how easy and inexpensive it now is to have your smile beaming.

For minor cases where the discoloration or tone issues are minimal, a whitening treatment is often all that is needed and that can be done in only a few hours in your local dentist office. However; todays dentist who offers cosmetic treatments has several options when approaching complicated cosmetic issues that involve more than one problem.
Acidic-micro-abrasion scrubs work to remove stubborn embedded stains that a basic bleaching process isn't able to treat, so that would be the next step in an aggressive whitening treatment. Beyond that is the option of porcelain veneers that will permanently brighten and whiten your smile for up to ten years.
Also, porcelain veneers are used to remedy "unevenness" problems as well as gaps between your teeth. Even missing teeth can new be permanently replaced with dental implants which are a permanent solution to an age old problem. So it seems that no matter what it is that is bothering you with regards to your smile when you look in the mirror, your dentist now has a remedy for it that often only requires just one visit.

The Pros and Cons of Porcelain Inlays

by Jordan Heften

Perhaps you have heard of the new trend in people having porcelain inlays installed in their teeth instead of convention fillings made from a metal amalgam comprised of mercury and silver or gold. For some people, its a decision made because they are uncomfortable with the mercury that is in the filling amalgam, while for others the reason is purely cosmetic.
This is because porcelain inlays are the same color as the tooth itself, so they tend to blend right in with the rest of the tooth. Is there other reasons why a person might or might not choose porcelain inlays for their next filling? One of the down sides of porcelain inlays is that they take two dentist visits to have installed, unlike a standard metal filling that takes only one visit.

This is because the porcelain inlay has to be made in a dental lab from a mold that is taken during the first visit. One more positive side of porcelain inlays however, is that unlike metal fillings they are far less susceptible to expansion and contraction caused by eating or drinking very cold or very hot foods and drinks.
This means that they will last longer and can never cause the tooth to crack. Also porcelain inlays tend to be far more secure over the long run, because they are actually glued into the tooth with a high tech dental adhesive.
Standard metal filings aren't glued in but rather are packed into a crevice that is shaped in such a way that the filling is "locked" into place when it is completed. Also, because porcelain inlays take two visits to have completely installed and have to be special made in a dental lab they of course are more expensive then a standard metal filling.

How To Brush Your Teeth Correctly - Personal Dental Care

by Don Robertson

Dental care by brushing may date as far back as the Babylonians and their ingenious use of a twig. We are fortunate that we do not have to cut a twig, fray the end and scrub our teeth with such a tool.
Today we have an assortment of tooth brushes available to us for our dental needs. Brushes range from a straight brush with bristles ranging from very soft to extremely stiff, to rotary electric brushes and brushes that use sound waves to blast plaque from the recesses of our teeth.
Our choices are abundant, but the most important thing is that we brush!
You should brush your teeth at least twice a day. A soft bristle will clean without damaging the gums. Also be careful. Many of us think in an over-abundant mode. If 2 minutes is good then wouldn't five or ten minutes be better.
Your teeth are with you for life. After your permanent teeth come in, there are no more natural replacements. Excessive brushing, over time will wear down the enamel and cause premature damage to your teeth. It may also damage your gums. So stick with the two minute limit. That will allow plenty of time to clean your teeth and gums.
We talk about brushing our teeth. But in effect, you are cleaning your mouth. Bacteria forms everywhere in your mouth, not just on your teeth. So take the time to gently brush your gums, the inside of your cheeks and yes, your tongue.

Many brands of toothpaste are available. Any brand that provides you with fluoride protection is usually good. Be careful to ensure that it does not have abrasive cleaning material in the paste. This too, over time and you certainly want to be around for a long time, can cause excessive wear to your teeth.
You do not need a large glob of toothpaste on your brush. Don't follow the example of the commercials where they squeeze toothpaste the length of the bristles. Yes this will sell more toothpaste but it will not increase the effectiveness. You only need a small amount, about the size of a pea, too clean your teeth.
To brush effectively:
1) Use a soft bristle brush.
2) Use fluoride toothpaste with no abrasive compound included.
3) Brush for two minutes.
4) Brush your gums, inside cheeks and tongue.
5) And brush twice a day.
If you will consistently apply these simple rules, along with correct and conscientious flossing, you will enjoy excellent dental care. Look for correct flossing techniques in another article.

Botox - Complementing Cosmetic Dentistry

by Al Cox and Ivan C

People who are interested in a complete smile makeover may consider several dental procedures in order to achieve a Hollywood smile, but in some cases dental enhancement isn't enough in order to correct the effect time has in our skin, particularly in our face. Taking the factors in consideration the cosmetic dentists have decided to add yet one more service to their already extensive list of services, Botox application.
Using dermal fillers in conjunction with Botox can provide the best results when it comes to age reversal. The application of Botox is virtually pain-free and compared to other treatments is a very effective nonsurgical wrinkle removal technique which is available to patients who not only are interested in oral anesthetics.
A few of the advantages of Botox provides is that its price and is very low compared to other procedures which are meant for wrinkle removal and age reversal, the entire process only takes a few minutes and there is virtually no recovery time involved, this makes it very attractive to people who did not want to spend time recovering after a painful surgery and it's also equally appealing to people who like to see fast results without risking their health.

Common areas where Botox is applied are: the forehead, the lips, neck, etc. these are usually areas where thermal collagen has worn off, and where a little extra boost is much needed and immediately noticeable.
When this procedure is combined with a professional smile makeover a patient may appear to be 10 to 15 years younger, this is a very realistic estimate. These age reversal techniques are often used by Hollywood stars who need to look young and invigorated basically at all times, everyday folks would be impressed by the dramatic changes that a combination of cosmetic dentistry and dermal fillers can have in a person.
Those who are concerned about how safe Botox really is should know that the FDA approved the substance back in 1989 and in the year 2001 alone around 1.6 million people use this substance for cosmetic purposes. Botox relaxes the muscles and prevents them from causing wrinkles or lines in our skin which is why many people prefare this non-invasive procedure over surgery.

All Natural Health - 7 Steps to Getting Ready For Mercury Filling Removal

by Annika Ek

Do you still have mercury amalgam fillings in your mouth? You have probably heard that they are linked to many conditions like depression, chronic fatigue, thyroid problems, food allergies and yeast conditions, to just name a few...
You may say that your mercury fillings are not causing you any trouble, which is great, but don't wait until you have symptoms to have them removed. Removing the mercury fillings will cause them to release even more mercury, so it is better to do it when you are in good shape and properly prepared.
For many toxic substances no symptoms are notices until a critical level is reached or you are compromised in other ways, like through great emotional stress. Mercury leaves the tooth as a vapor when you eat, drink and brush your teeth, and it enters and accumulates in your body.
But don't rush out now to have your fillings removed immediately. It is important that you find the right dentist to do the job and take the time to prime your body before removing these toxic fillings. Even if you think you have no mercury fillings left, it may be worthwhile to visit a biological dentist to make sure all of it is actually gone.
1. Find the Right Dentist for the Job
To find a mercury free or biological dentist, ask around or search through any of these organizations:
- International Association of Mercury Free Dentist (IAMFD) 800 335 7755
- International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology ( IAOMT ) (863) 429-6373
- International Association of Biological Dentistry and Medicine (281) 651-1745
- Holistic Dental Association (619) 923-3120

2. Ask the Right Questions
Here are a few questions you are smart to ask your dentist before you book your appointment to have your fillings removed.
- How many fillings are removed at one time? The answer to this question will depend on your general state of health; just make sure that only one quadrant of your mouth is worked on at each visit, this is to make sure meridians are not messed with.
- How are you protected during the procedure? Make sure you get oxygen, vitamin C, cotton or a rubber dam in your mouth and activated charcoal to take after the procedure.
- Do they offer bio-compatibility testing for the material that will replace the mercury? If it is not done in the office, ask for a referral to someone who can help.
It is wise to follow the suggestions below for 3-4 weeks before starting removal of your mercury fillings.
3. Eat the Right Diet
Eat a diet limited in sugar and processed foods, but make sure your diet is high in protein since the sulfur bearing amino acids will help in the detoxification.
4. Tune Up Your Liver & Kidneys
Start with a liver & kidney cleanse so they are ready to deal with the increased mercury levels right after the removal of the fillings. Use herbs and drainage remedies to do this.
5. Stock Up on the Good Minerals & Antioxidants
Vitamin C and Vitamin E are antioxidants and will help protect your cells against free radical activity. Take 250 - 500 mg of vitamin C with every meal and 400 units of vitamin E daily.
Supplementing with quality minerals to ensure a healthy mineral base is also essential, since the body is forced to use toxic metals if there are no others around. Especially the trace minerals selenium and zinc are important in mercury detoxification, but avoid extra copper and iron, unless instructed otherwise by your health care practitioner.
Minerals need sufficient hydrochloric acid in the stomach to be ionized and absorbed into the body where it is needed. If you are over age 50 or have food allergies it is recommended that you take a digestive enzyme with hydrochloric acid (Betaine Hydrochloride) at the beginning of your meal.
6. Culture Your Internal Garden
Take a high potency quality strain of probiotics, like HMF Super Powder from Genestra. This is to make sure you have a strong intestinal flora to support you during the detox.
7. Be Very Regular
Since 90% of mercury leaves the body through the bowel make sure it is moving well, or you may end up making things worse! You should have 1 -2 bowel movements daily. If you need help to get your bowel going take 3 tbsp of Hemp Seeds daily, drink lots of water and take a green powder that is naturally high in magnesium.
A final caution to not start chelating with products like chlorella and cilantro until all the fillings are removed, since you don't want to start pulling mercury out of your teeth and in to your system. This is only done AFTER all the fillings are removed.
Watch for Part II of this article series and learn what to do on the day of the removal and how to detox afterwards.

Where to Find Invisalign - Who do You Know?

by Blake Abel

It would be silly for me to give locations of dentists that offer Invisalign and tell you exactly where to go for treatment. There are just too many. If that is what you are looking for than you can stop reading now. There are a lot of options out there for people who are looking for the Invisalign treatment. This article addresses how to go about getting Invisalign, the best places to look and what to expect when you walk into the great smelling dentist office.
The initial stage in the process must starts with you wanting to change your smile. It may seem like a hassle to many, to have braces on for a year or so and deal with the pain and embarrassment. However many people we have talked to are thrilled they went ahead with it and have enjoyed improved confidence and smiles from this experience. Once you have overcome this initial fear you are ready to read on.
The Second Stage would consist of reading articles like this one and others that are informative and let you know exactly what you are getting into. Archwired, Invisalign, and Antibraces are all great .com websites that can give you information on the Invisalign treatment and the comparisons with braces, side-effects, and what to expect. If you like what you read and hear start looking for a dentist...

Here is the tricky part; because there are so many dentists/orthodontists out there that offer the Invisalign treatment at SO many different prices it is difficult to know who to choose. Here are a couple of ways you can improve and narrow your search.
1. Every Dentist charges a different amount for Invisalign. This is due to how much Invisalign charges the dentist for their product. It is not necessarily that one dentist charges $6,000 to rip you off and the other charges $3000 cause he's a nice guy, it is because Invisalign charges different amounts to their customers (the dentists) depending on the dentist and how much Invisalign treatments he orders.
2. Where to look: A place to look for the low-cost or most experienced dentists (not necessarily the most expensive) is the Invisalign website. They have a great directory that allows you to see the rankings and stars of various dentists that use their product. You can search by zip code as well to see if there is one in your area. There are forums out there as well of people in your area that may have advice
You have made it into the beautiful dentist office that smells like salmonella and perfume and you are ready to get the treatment. Make sure that you know the cost and what your Insurance covers before committing and get ready to have a better smile, because it is totally worth the time and effort you will put into it. Ask others around you as well, they may have gone through the same issues and difficult decisions you are attempting. There are always people out there who want to help create awareness and give you a better smile.

How Can I Banish Bad Breath - Get Rid Of The Nasty Smell

by Doug Pace

Anyone who suffers from this problem understands how humiliating it can be. Your confidence level seems to take a dip because you lose some of your self esteem when people walk away from you or even tell you about your problem. This article is geared towards providing you with some valuable information; if you have constantly asked yourself the question "how can i banish bad breath" Then you will receive some useful tips here.
1. Halitosis is caused by decayed food particles between your teeth and at the gum line. The bacteria that is in your mouth is cause of the smelly odor that comes from your mouth; which is especially more noticeable in the morning. To help get rid of your bad breath you should begin brushing your teeth at least twice a day and if possible after each and every meal. You should also make it a daily habit to floss every night before you go to sleep. This will actually help prevent the bacteria from accumulating during the night.
2. Stay away from foods that can cause your breath to smell. Foods like fish, onions, coffee and caffeinated beverages can cause an odor in your mouth. Begin eating foods that can help your breath smell better like parsley, cilantro and ginger; eat these foods raw.

3. Keep your mouth from becoming dry by drinking more water. Bacteria will grow more easily in your mouth if you do not keep it moist. Begin by drinking two liters of water a day which can help clean out the bodies toxins. Drinking more water will keep your mouth moist and will help wash out the food particles that are left in your mouth and between your teeth.
4. Cleanse your colon on a regular basis; this will help banish bad breath. Whether you choose to believe it your colon can be responsible for your bad breath, it is tied directly to your mouth; and if your colon is filthy your breath will see the effects of it. You can easily begin cleansing your colon by eating more bran or using a herbal laxative. Before you purchase a laxative to use; you should visit your family doctor to see what he recommends.
5. Visit your dentist on a regular basis; this alone can prevent this problem. By visiting your dentist and doing all the preventative work this can help reduce any problems like bad breath, cavities or anything else that may be a problem.
By taking proper oral hygiene care you can begin to gain your confidence back. You will begin to notice that people will be able to stand around you without pulling away from you. Get The Smile Back In Your Life With Restorative Dentist NYC

by Brad Taylor

Most of us remember the childhood lessons that we had learnt and especially, the little habits that we form during our childhood remains with us for the rest of our lives. One such habit is that of brushing our teeth at least twice daily, once in the morning and once before going off to bed. Now, this had been programmed into our very mindset that maintaining a basic oral hygiene is very crucial to having a good set of teeth and a beautiful smile. Mothers ensure that their children form this habit very early in life and also take their children to the dentist for routine dental check ups. However, as we grow older and start leading our own lives, at times we may take our good health or perfect set of teeth for granted and forget about the routine care and that is when problems arise. Also in some cases a disease or an accident might cause damage to the teeth. In other instances, a person's teeth may be naturally defective like misaligned teeth. The perfect solution to all these varied problems is a visit to a restorative dentist in NYC.
Rectifying problems like misaligned teeth, broken tooth or even crooked tooth is the domain of a restorative dentist in NYC. The restoration procedure is multi faceted and covers the entire range from clear braces, teeth whitening process to even tooth contouring. A competent restorative dentist in NYC will carry out a thorough investigation of the problem and accordingly provide the apt treatment to ensure that your teeth are restored to their natural state.
A restorative dentist in NYC carries out various treatment procedures like filling up gaps in the teeth and even recreating a missing tooth. All you need to do is find out a competent dentist, who has the necessary experience to handle your case. A little background research is immensely helpful in these circumstances and you could use the internet or the yellow pages to select the right dentist to offer restorative treatment to your teeth. Some of the most common problems faced by individuals today are stained teeth because of their food habits. Consuming extreme temperature edibles like hot beverages, cold deserts and of course nicotine intake leaves its marks on our teeth. A restorative dentist can easily take care of such problems and restore our shiny white teeth to its natural state.

Oral problems usually occur due to sheer negligence of the individual unless it is caused by some disease or accident. So only if we maintain a regular oral hygiene in spite of our busy lifestyle we may never have to undergo a treatment by a restorative dentist in NYC. It is also crucial to visit the dentist at regular intervals even if there is no specific problem that we are suffering from because prevention is any day better than a cure. In spite of our best efforts if some dental problems still arise, then we can easily opt for restorative or cosmetic dentistry that is both easy and affordable once we have selected the right doctor.

Spa Dentistry Puts a Ka-bosh on Dental Distress

by Susan Gans

Patients don't often consider a visit to the dentist any kind of relaxing treat. In fact, the anxiety over having dental work done can be reflected in the fewer than two-thirds of adult Americans who report visiting a dentist during a twelve-month period (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). In light of these kinds of statistics, dentists are turning to the way of the spa to offer dental experiences that are more relaxing for their patients. It may seem hard to believe, but these days a visit to the dentist might even have you emerging more relaxed than ever.
A fairly new trend, spa dentistry combines spa and dental treatments to varying degrees. Some dentistry practices are infusing treatments such as reflexology, a strategic food massage, to help calm anxious patients. Other practices might offer more indepth spa treatments alongside dental procedures, such as aromatherapy, massaging dental chairs, paraffin wax hand treatments, and scented neck pillows. Patients also enjoy gourmet refreshments like coffee, herbal tea and fresh baked cookies. Spa dental offices may also offer concierge, mineral essential facials, and even virtual reality glasses to view movies during dental treatments. Cascading water fountains and soothing music bring a sense of calm to some of these more posh environments.
In one New York City dental practice, services can also include botox treatments, offered through a certified plastic surgeon. Patients like the fact that they can check a six-month cleaning off their list while also further enhancing their appearance. Considered a natural extension of dental work, botox improves a smile and overall patient satisfaction.

An Irving, Texas dentistry has adopted a philosophy of making the patient feel like they are anywhere but the dental office. To that end, the practice provides diversions for squeamish patients, including a large selection of music to create an ambient atmosphere; massage mats remotely controlled by the patient; spearmint pressure point cream massaged into the temples to ease stress; and lifescape glasses. A Baskin Robbins milkshake, hot towel, lip balm, and ibuprofen are even made available to patients who have had their mouth numbed.
Patients of a practice in Seattle, Washington, are tucked beneath a fuzzy blanket while heated lavender-filled pillows prop the neck and back. Instead of avoiding bright lights, patients rest their eyes under a lavender eye mask, and their hands receive a skin-softening treatment in lavender-scented mittens. Male patients prefer the movies through virtual-reality glasses. The relaxation techniques are effective for making the anesthetic work better and easing any pain associated with the dental treatments.
All this frou-frou treatment is more than some Manhattan socialite's idea of "me-time." Both relaxation techniques and oral health have proven to be important for patients at risk for conditions like heart attack or disease. As the dentist treats potential gum disease, a massage therapist helps patients overcome anxiety through massage.
Stress reduction techniques are especially imperative for patients with known heart disease. In fact, the American Dental Association recommends not only these kinds of techniques but also shorter dental appointments early in the day to reduce heart attack risk. For example, patients who have undergone heart value replacement are at higher risk for a rare life-threatening condition called bacterial endocarditis. Dentists working with heart patients may find relaxation techniques and monitoring for complications could prove to be a life saver.

Gum Disease

by Joseph Devine

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is where the tissues that support your teeth have an infection. Although it may look as though the gums are attached very high to the teeth, it's not as high as it may look. The small v-shaped gap is called a sulcus between the tooth and gums. The infection stems from the sulcus. When the disease damages the tissues, the sulcus develops into a pouch. The more severe the disease is, the greater the depth of the pouch is. If the disease gets bad enough you might have to visit a periodontist for special attention.
Periodontal disease is usually caused by plaque collecting on your teeth and gums. Plaque is an invisible sticky layer of germs that contains bacteria that irritate and damage the tissues and teeth. Depending on how severe it is depends on how the gum diseases are classified. The two main phases of the disease are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a more mild form of the disease that only affects the gums and can be taken care of if seen by a dentist. Periodontal disease, however, can not be taken care of as easily. This is when the disease eventually leads to more critical forms of the disease like periodontitis. When you have Periodontitis, this can lead to having your teeth become loose and even falling out. This can also lead to infection in the gums, sulcus, and the bone. If you don't get the plaque off of your gums in a timely manner, it will harden and form a calculus crust. Once this calculus is on your teeth, it is almost impossible to remove it without the help of a dentist.

There can be many different signs that can let you know that your gums are becoming infected. Tissues bleeding when brushing teeth, inflamed and even sore gums, permanent teeth that are loose or separating, persistent bad breath. Sometimes there aren't any signs that there are problems so getting a regular check up with your dentist would be highly recommended. If any kind of infection is beginning to occur, your dentist will see it and be able to take care of it effectively. The earlier you can catch this disease, the better off your gums will be. Females are more likely to get this disease during pregnancy and while taking birth control because of the hormones.

Would Teeth Whitening Brighten My Smile And My Life?

by Charles Newman

A quick glance through any celebrity gossip magazine would instantly highlight the fact every actor, actress, sports star, IT girl or wannabe have unnaturally white teeth. In some cases celebrities' teeth are gleaming so intensely it is the first, and only, noticeable thing. In the last decade teeth whitening has really taken off, today, anyone sporting bad or stained nashers is instantly slated by the press. With dozens of different methods, catchy names such as 'zoom whitening' and even DIY whitening kits available from chemists, what's stopping you putting the star back in your smile?
Teeth can lose their colour very easily. The most common reason for discoloration is teeth getting stained from excess consumption of tea, coffee, fizzy drinks, alcohol and of course, cigarettes. Unfortunately even if you avoid the above, your teeth can simply discolour over time, since aging will naturally cause teeth to lose their shine. Additionally teeth discoloration is genetic, so if your parents' teeth are tainted naturally, there is a very strong possibility your teeth will follow suit.
Before jumping on the bleached teeth band wagon, there are some definite steps to consider and be wary of. According to the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) teeth whitening is the most popular form of dental treatment in the UK, however this huge amount of interest and popularity brings about a number of copy cat and knock off products, claiming to whiten teeth as well as the leading dentists can. Firstly the whitening process involves applying chemicals to the surface of teeth, which can damage the enamel, gums and other sensitive areas such as the lips, therefore it is always recommended that only qualified and experienced dentists should carry out the delicate procedure.

Unfortunately not everyone can afford the same dentistry options as the stars, however the DIY whitening kit from the chemists might not be as cost effective as first thought. There have been numerous complaints about these products, ranging from dislikeable taste to excruciating pain experienced in gums. To make matters worse, none of the reported whitening kits' results have been as effective or successful as promised.
In conclusion don't be afraid to contemplate whitening your teeth, you too can have a smile suitable for any celebrity gossip magazine. Teeth whitening procedures have come a long way in the last decade; it is now one of the safest, easiest and painless cosmetic surgery procedures available. Do not hide away your smile because you are embarrassed to show stained, aged teeth. Brighten everyone's day with your pearly whites.
Smile!

New Invention For Denture Wearers To Improve Denture Support, Retention And Stability

by Terry Weber

Everyone who wears dentures (false teeth) understands the way their denture gets its basic
(1) support from their gums and jawbones. They also know from first hand experience the
(2) stability of the denture is best achieved when the denture does not move side-to-side or front to back. They also agree completely that
(3) suction or surface tension is a basic requirement of wearing a denture that is comfortable and reliable at all times. These three basic considerations, when properly achieved, can provide the wearer with dentures that are always kept in place while chewing food. In addition, by eliminating denture movement (#2) the wearer will feel much more confident and trusting that his denture will stay in place and not cause any "loose denture" embarrassment when eating at home or out in public.
It is well known that the gums and bones of the mouth always shrink and gradually change shape over time after most or all of the natural teeth are removed, All of these changes eventually mean that dentures that fit quite well when new, will slowly lose the stability, support and retention needed for the wearer's comfort.
When Weber had this experience with his own personal denture, he said: "That is when I realized the need all denture wearers have to inexpensively add an additional material to the inside of the denture to compensate for that natural gum and bone shrinkage. After much investigation, the result is my invention of this brand new way to reline any upper or lower denture with a low cost, no mixing needed, do-it-yourself-at-home, denture liner kit."

The new Weber Denture Liner Kit (Patent Pending) contains an always soft and flexible liner compound made to self-adhere to the top or inside of both upper and lower dentures where they contact the skin of the gums. With this kit in use there are many extra benefits the denture wearer will realize such as: no more sore spots caused by loose dentures rubbing the gums raw while chewing; no more loose or noisy dentures, and a return to the joys of once again eating and chewing all kinds of food confidently.
For more information and to learn exactly how this new Weber Denture Liner Kit can help people get more comfortable use of their dentures visit http://originalsbyweber.com where you will find everything you need to know about this new kind of denture re-liner and much more.

Alternatives To Flouride

by Mike Scantlebury

I live in Manchester, England. It's a unique city. Apart from hosting one of the most famous football teams in the world, and having one of the dampest climates, (although Seattle is worse, apparently), it also has one of the strangest attributes in the country: it has clean water. No fluoride has been added. As most people know, fluoride is a rare metal that is hard to find in nature, but since the 1960s British families have been entertaining it every day - in the water that they drink from the tap.
Fluoride is a poison. You're not advised to take a bottle of it and swallow it, you'd die. However, in small doses, it's claimed that it has a rare property: it can save your teeth from decay. Research has shown, or so it is claimed, that small quantities of fluoride in the water that we drink can strengthen the enamel in our teeth and prevent the formation of cavities. Since English children have some of the worst teeth in the world, anything that can help to prevent further decay is seen as a good thing, no matter how outlandish. Because of course, it's a strange plan. Here's the proposition: we will add something to your water that is in itself a hazard, but it will avoid an even worse problem, tooth decay. Who could possibly vote against that? Manchester did. They've kept the water free of this metallic additive for almost two generations, while the rest of the ground has lapped it up, literally. There's been mixed results.
In the first place, levels of tooth decay in children are uncomfortably high. Why is that? Are children in Manchester bad at cleaning their teeth? Don't they realise the benefits of flossing? Well, that may be so, but not for want of trying. School nurses regularly lecture the kids on the best way of using a toothbrush, and if you go into any primary school in the city, you will see posters and pictures on the wall of healthy teeth - the aim, after all. Maybe there's another reason: good advice, in itself, doesn't work. That's certainly been the attitude in other parts of the country. We don't want people to have rotten teeth, they say, so we're going to add fluoride to the water and the amount of fillings will go down, whether people want that or that. Of course they want that, you say! It's obvious! But no, that's not obvious. If you, or any member of your family wanted to avoid losing your teeth, the answer is glaring, right in front of your nose: eat less sweets and chocolate, and brush and clean more regularly. Why don't people do that? They say they will, they promise they will, they even resolve to do that, every New Year, when they make Resolutions for the coming twelve months. But just like plans to go to the gym, and great ideas about giving up other self-destructive habits, the common behaviour is that all the good intentions fall by the wayside and the bad habits, and unhealthy ways of life, spring back to the fore in the Spring.

Fluoridation is a good example of doing something FOR people, even though, in a logical world, they wouldn't need it. Because, as every parent knows, there are alternatives. If you agree that fluoride is good for you, you can buy toothpaste with it built-in. You can then apply the potential benefits directly to where it is needed, in your mouth, without involving anyone else in your health binge. No, we can't seem to simply do that. Somehow we know that eating sweet things is bad for us, but we still do it. We know that brushing and flossing is good for our teeth, but we don't do it. So someone, in this case Local Government, steps in and says, Right, we can't trust you to do the right thing. We're going to have to do it for you, (and take the decision out of your hands). We'll add the stuff to water, so you can't avoid it. You will now get the health benefits, (whether you would choose to have them or not). Yep, that's a great way of treating people like children, and forcing 'good behaviour' onto the population, despite all the efforts we make every day to transform ourselves into overweight, unhealthy, ugly and toothless.
The biggest consequence is that this sort of overbearing authority removes consequences from people's lives. In a logical world it would be simple: you eat sweet things, your teeth fall out. Now it's up to you. You choose. You eat those candy bars, you'll get false teeth. Your choice. In our topsy-turvey world, it's all different. Oops, you're eating that bad stuff. Well, we don't want to step in and interfere with your decisions. You've decided to eat it, (despite our good advice), and we can't stop you. Aah, but we can add stuff to the water you drink. That'll cure you, whether you change your way of life, or not. You WILL be healthy.
It's a dangerous step. Once you've added some 'medicine' to the water supply, there's a precedent for finding reasons to add more, and more. In the 1960s some people thought it would be a good idea to add LSD to the reservoirs, because, hey man, we're all too buttoned up. Let's hang loose, baby. Uh, no, we disagreed with those wild hippies, at the time, and since. But in our modern world, there are terrorists trying to add poison to our water too, because they see it as a good way to persuade our governments to follow their manifesto. That seems outrageous, until you realise that the existing water isn't pure anyway, is it? It's already been tampered with, in the name of making us better citizens. The terrorists are perhaps merely following an example set by our very own leaders.
It's a fluid situation. People will always do the unexpected, and then, leave the experts confounded. In recent years, people with lots of money and no sense, have been paying over the odds for bottled water, convinced by advertising that tells them that what's in the plastic bottle will do them a whole world of good. Well, maybe the fluid has been 'filtered by volcanoes' or 'bottled at source', (which means it's full of minerals, apparently), but the important thing is that it isn't tap water. Despite what all the medicators have been trying to do, they have been fooled by the ultimate put-down: fashion. Suddenly, it's just not cool to be seen drinking water out of the tap - no matter how good it is for you - and sucking out of a plastic teat is now all the rage in our modern world. Bad luck, legislators. You're just going to have to find some new way to do people good. They simply aren't downing the medicated water supplies you've prescribed for them. Who could have predicted that?

Bad Breath - What Causes Bad Breath?

by Corwin Brown

Bad breath, or halitosis, can be a major problem, especially when you're about to snuggle with your sweetie or whisper a joke to your friend. The good news is that bad breath can often be prevented with some simple steps.
The foods eaten also are a potential cause of halitosis. Certain foods, such as garlic, onions and certain spices are frequently cited as cause for a person's bad breath. Both vegetarians and those who eat large quantities of meat may develop bad breath due, in part, to the digestive process. Digestion begins in the mouth. Saliva has enzymes which begin the digestion process, and the type of food eaten can affect the food chemistry of the mouth. Saliva will also pick up odors from food within several hours after it has been eaten. Odors are strongest from carbohydrates - sugars, starches and cellulose, less strong from proteins, and nonexistent from fats. Bacteria in the mouth react with the decaying food and drink residue and can be the source of the foul odor.
Gum disease, most certainly, can cause bad breath, because food trapped in gum pockets can rot and ferment, which releases sulfur products, and increases tartar buildup on the teeth, which also traps bacteria that release sulfur products. Most know that smoking causes bad breath, and that heart problems eventually result from the habit, but few realize that smoking causes gum disease, and that gum disease can cause heart problems.

Bad breath is also associated with sinus infections because nasal discharge from your sinuses into the back of your throat can cause mouth odor. A child with bad breath may have a foreign object lodged in his or her nose. A bean or small item stuck in the nose can cause persistent nasal discharge and a foul odor. Strep throat, tonsillitis and mononucleosis can cause bad breath until the throat infection clears. Bronchitis and other upper respiratory infections in which you cough up odorous sputum are other sources. Canker sores may be related to bad breath, especially if they accompany periodontal disease.
Bad Breath is usually caused by the breakdown of proteins by bacteria somewhere in the mouth. Bad breath is not contagious, meaning you cannot catch it from someone else. Chronic bad breath, known as Halitosis, does not come from the stomach. The only odor that comes from the stomach is when you burp. Food eaten such as garlic and spicy foods once absorbed into the body can release odor through the lungs when you breathe.
Bad breath in the low/no-carb sect is often caused by certain chemicals that are released in the breath as the body burns fat. They are called ketones, and entering into a fat-burning state of ketosis is the hallmark of the Atkins diet. So the good news is that if your breath stinks, you're probably doing a good job of sticking to that low-carb diet.
Bad breath may be the sign of a medical disorder, such as a local infection in the respiratory tract, chronic sinusitis, postnasal drip, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, gastrointestinal disturbance, liver or kidney ailment. If your dentist determines that your mouth is healthy, you may be referred to your family doctor or a specialist to determine the cause of bad breath.

Bad Breath - The Top 5 Natural Cures For Bad Breath

by Kelvin Ho Wee Min

Having bad breath can be a major problem that interferes with your career, your social circle, and of course your intimate relationships as well. There are many things that people do to mask bad breath and sometimes when you have no other options - and the boss is walking your way! - it might be advisable to grab that mint or stick of gum. But if you're interested in the top 5 natural cures for bad breath, then you're in luck. After all, why not cure a condition if you can, rather than constantly trying to cover it up?
One of the top 5 natural cures for bad breath is chewing parsley or mint leaves. There are two reasons these seem to work. The first is that they are both very heavy in natural oils, which lubricate your mouth and help to move out food particles that break down and cause bad breath due to bacteria. They also help to neutralize stomach acids, which also cause bad breath.
Another one of the top 5 natural cures for bad breath is milk thistle, available at most health food stores or pharmacies. Milk thistle is thought to work as a curative on the liver, helping to move bacteria through this natural filter and out of the body.

Silica or silicon dioxide is another of the top 5 natural cures for bad breath, as it too is thought to get rid of toxins and foreign substances in the body. Silica appears naturally in the body but is sometimes prescribed for cases of gum disease, infection, and mouth ulcers. Silica is typically available at the pharmacy as well.
Sweet fennel is a calming herb for the stomach and is also considered one of the top 5 natural cures for bad breath. When your stomach is upset and churning up acids and other digestive elements, this can give you bad breath. By using sweet fennel you settle your stomach and address your breath as well.
And many people may not think of it as being one of the top 5 natural cures for bad breath, but drinking enough water is very important. By staying hydrated you help the body to digest the way it should, calm those stomach acids, and help move dried food particles out of your mouth. So try these cures and see if you can't soon open your mouth with confidence!

Affordable Dental Care - How To Save Big Bucks On Your Next Visit To The Dentist

by Jessica Marino

Going to the dentist?
We all dread those visits to the dentist, the needles, the sound of the instruments, the effect of the anesthesia after we leave their office...and last...but not least.... the hefty bill!
Dental procedures in the US have become extremely expensive, almost prohibitive...causing people to avoid important and necessary visits to maintain healthy teeth. How can families afford to keep their teeth healthy? Just a visit for a cleaning can break your bank!
Fortunatley for us, someone out there had the insight to create "Discount Dental Plans", where for a low monthly fee, your entire family can save 60% to 80% on all dental work, including braces. These plans are extremely flexible with no deductibles or pre-existing conditions clauses; no waiting periods, you can start enjoying the savings immediately after you enroll. But...how does this work? Why would any dentist accept a discounted fee for his or her services when he or she could get the full retail amount? *How does the dentis benefits from these plans? The benefit to the dentists is that they get paid right away, at the time of service. No paperwork to fill out and submit to the insurance, no 90 to 120 day wait to get reimbursed a discounted fee anyway.

*How do YOU benefit from these plans? Savings, Savings, Savings. You can literally cut your dental bills in half.
These plans are growing in popularity tremendously, with millions of new members enrolling every day. Some of these plans are so versatile, they even include discount benefits for vision, prescription and chiropractic services.
So....grab your plan today and take care of those precious teeth!
