Tongue Cleaning for Bad Breath

by R. Drysdale

Oral malodor experts tell us that tongue cleaning for bad breath is the single most important preventative step we can take. Why? Because the offensive odor associated with bad breath is produced by bacteria living in the mouth and vast numbers of these bacteria actually live and reproduce on the surface of the tongue. Many details are still unknown about halitosis causes and cures, but this much is documented scientific fact.
The relationship between halitosis and tongue bacteria came to light as soon as it was understood that anaerobic bacteria - just one group among the many types of bacteria that normally inhabit the mouth - produce foul smelling volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) as a byproduct of protein metabolism. Anaerobes thrive in locations where there is very little or no oxygen: decreasing the number and area of those locations decreases the number of anaerobes and is the basis of the logic that tongue cleaning for bad breath is effective.
The architecture of the back of the tongue provides ideal habitat for anaerobic bacteria. There, the tongue surface is grooved and divided creating deep crevices where anaerobes produce halitosis and tongue coatings of mucous that help to protect these bacteria from harmful oxygen. Tongue cleaning for bad breath not only removes the mucous, exposing more surface area to oxygen, it also physically removes a lot of the bacteria. In an otherwise healthy mouth, this may represent the majority of anaerobes that are present.

Tongue cleaning for bad breath involves either gently brushing or scraping the surface of the tongue, especially the area furthest back. If you open your mouth and extend your tongue, you will likely see a whitish coating toward the back - this is the coating you need to remove. Proceed gently so as not to damage the delicate tissues of the tongue - some people use a toothbrush and scrub gently; others use a small inverted spoon, but you can also purchase tongue scrapers designed specifically for the task of breaking the cycle of halitosis and tongue anaerobes. If you suffer from halitosis and intend to make tongue cleaning a regular habit, the minimal cost of a tongue cleaner is well worth it.

Who Needs Dental Implants?

by Steven Brazis

Over the past twenty years, dental implants have been constantly improving. The science and technology for dental implants now makes implants as predictable and reliable as more traditional dental restorative procedures like crowns and bridges.
Implants are done in two distinct stages. A titanium artificial tooth root is surgically placed into the jaw bone by an oral surgeon, periodontist or general dentist with specialized training. The top of the implant is just below the level of gum tissue and exposed to the inside of the mouth by leaving a small hole in the gums. A "healing cap" is screwed into the threads of the implant to prevent the gum tissue from growing over or into the implant.
A period of 6 weeks to several months is required for the titanium implant to "integrate" with the jaw bone. That means that the bone actually attaches to the implant to provide stability. It should be realized that this attachment is NOT the same as with a natural tooth. There is no periodontal ligament involved, which is the feature in bone to tooth attachment that allows for tooth movement through bone. Implants cannot be moved orthodontically nor be exposed to forces that cause natural teeth to move in response. For this reason, if implants are being considered with multiple missing teeth, your dentist must plan the number of implants and type of restoration placed on the implants carefully.
The type of restoration placed on the implant are varied. In the case of a single tooth, a piece called an abutment is screwed into the implant to replace the healing cap when osseo-integration of the implant has been accomplished. A crown (or cap) is then cemented over the abutment just as if this were a natural tooth that had been prepared for a crown.

There can be several single tooth implants placed either adjacent to one another or in various locations around the mouth where teeth are missing. However, when the span of missing teeth is too great, it becomes more cost effective as well as biologically supportable to place two or three implants and link them together with a fixed bridge. There will be more teeth showing on the bridge than there are implants, just like with traditional bridges on natural teeth. These are also supported be abutments screwed into the implants as with single tooth implants.
When there are many missing teeth (or all of them) implants are usually used to support a removable denture. In these cases, several implants are linked together with a cast metal bar screwed into the implants on short posts. On the under side of the denture clips are inserted which clip onto the bar between the implants. A denture made this way is vastly more comfortable than a traditional denture because it largely rests on the bar instead of the tissue, thus eliminating many of the sore spots caused by dentures. Additionally, the denture is locked into place by the clips and is extremely stable, unlike dentures which tend to slip and shift or come completely out much more easily.
Although implants can be very expensive by comparison with other more traditional dental prosthetics, the potential benefits make them equally valuable. Most patients who have had traditional dental prosthetics replaced by implant supported prosthetics are so happy that they would never go back.

Dr. Steven Brazis has practiced family and cosmetic dentistry for 35 years. His practice is in Sacramento, CA. He has written extensively on dentistry for the lay person. His web site is: Toothhaven.com

Bad Breath - Using a Halimeter To Fight Bad Breath

by Kelvin Ho Wee Min

Many people today are turning to the use of a halimeter to fight bad breath by getting an accurate reading of how bad their breath is and just what compounds are causing it to be bad in the first place. But what is this instrument, and just how can you use a halimeter to fight bad breath? Is it something you use at home, and how does it work?
A halimeter is a little machine that you use that takes a reading of your breath through a special tube you blow into. It looks something like a desktop version of the breathalyser machines that police officers use. To use a halimeter to fight bad breath, you would check your breath on a regular basis and let the machine dissect your breath to figure out the many different chemicals and enzymes it contains. The most common causes of bad breath in hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide. By realizing what chemicals are in your breath that's causing its odor you can then better address the problem at its roots.
A dentist can help you use a halimeter to fight bad breath by giving you a thorough exam, taking a health history, and using a chart or record to note improvements in your situation. By recording the different enzymes and chemicals that are in your breath he or she can understand if the treatment you're using is working, and can also get a better idea of where your bad breath is coming from. Using cover-ups such as gum and mints just are not going to fix your bad breath completely, but understanding where the odor is coming from and tracking the effectiveness of your treatment options is going to help eliminate the problem completely.

Unfortunately you cannot purchase your own halimeter to fight bad breath at home; this is something only your dentist can use. Many bad breath clinics also use a halimeter to fight bad breath by having their clients come in on a regular basis for a reading and recommendation. If you have chronic halitosis, you should not hesitate to speak to your dentist about using one of these machines to monitor your breath and figure out the problems with it. If he or she does not have one in their office, they can probably recommend another practitioner that does, so definitely make an appointment with your dentist and ask.

Should I Buy an Electric Toothbrush?

by Mark McClean

Thinking of buying an Electric Toothbrush? That is probably is good decision for most people.
Why brushing your teeth is so important.
Brushing your teeth properly is extremely important to your overall oral hygiene and can certainly be accomplished with a non-powered toothbrush. To brush your teeth effectively simply squeeze a small amount of toothpaste containing fluoride and the American Medical Association (ADA) seal of approval onto a soft-bristle brush. Holding your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle use short back and froth strokes and brush the outer surfaces of the teeth along the gum line. This is where gum disease begins. Do not brush too hard as you can damage your gums this way. Brush on top of the chewing surfaces of the teeth and for the frontal teeth use gentle up and down strokes with the tip of the brush. Bacteria hide where you do not like to brush so be sure to reach back and brush the molars in the back of your mouth. And do not forget to brush your tongue to prevent the build up of bacteria. That is one of the causes of bad breath.
Why do I need an electric toothbrush?

If you brush thoroughly, as just mentioned, for at least two full minutes twice each day you do not need an electric toothbrush. However for the average person in today's fast paced society brushing for two minutes rarely takes place which means you may be leaving plaque behind that can cause tooth decay. Manual brushing yields about 300 strokes per minute where as an electric toothbrush can deliver up to 50,000 strokes per minute. That's a big difference! What's more, most electric toothbrushes have a timing device to let you know when you have brushed the proper amount of time. Sounds like a little thing but if the timer will help you form a good daily dental habit it really is a big deal. Today's modern electric toothbrushes also have sensors that let you know when you are brushing too hard.
Bottom line: Yes, if you are disciplined and conscientious you can get good results brushing your teeth with a non-powered toothbrush but on average most of us will receive better results with an electric toothbrush.

What Is Causing Your Bad Breath?

by Ruth Walby

Some of the most embarrassing moments in your life will probably happen when you can't do anything about them.
You're in a group-either business or social-when some well-meaning person leans in closely and whispers in your ear, "You really need to do something about your bad breath!"
Everyone has bad breath every day only to different degrees. We all wake up in the morning with morning breath, brush and then our breath becomes stale throughout the day if we don't get a chance to brush again. It's a problem we all share as human beings (yes, Brad, Angelina and even the Queen of England). It's so embarrassing that most people hate to even talk about it. Can you imagine having to tell the Queen she needs a Tic Tac?
If you've tried to smell your own breath by breathing into your hand and then quickly sniffing, the truth is you can't smell your breath that way. You could have the title of Mr. Stinky Breath of the Year in the bag and probably never realize it.
How are you to know when your breath smells foul or skunky? (I apologize for this pun in advance.) There are two easy tests you can do to find out quickly:
1. Lick your wrist, or if you wear perfume on your wrist, lick the back of your clean hand instead. Wait a few seconds for the saliva to dry and then sniff. What you smell is what other people smell when you speak.
2. Take a teaspoon, turn it over so that the hollow side points toward your tongue and then gently scrape the back of your tongue. If you withdraw the spoon and see a white coating, you know you just scraped off a bunch of bacteria. Put the scraping on the back of your hand or your wrist and sniff. What you smell now is what other people smell when you exhale.
According to the most current research, over 90 percent of all cases of bad breath originate in the mouth, NOT in the stomach, sinuses, or lungs as most people think. About 95% of all bad breath cases are caused by millions of bacteria that naturally exist in your mouth. They produce a foul-smelling gas--caused by Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs). One compound is hydrogen sulfide (the rotten egg smell) and another is methyl mercaptan (the essence of skunk oil). That's BAD BREATH! And I did apologize earlier for the puns.
WHAT CAN YOU USE?
Gums, Mints, Breath Sprays and Breath Strips: these all provide a refreshing burst of freshness and flavor to the mouth anytime of the day but don't really do much for bad breath long term. They mask the mouth odor only for a short time.
Brushing and Flossing: both highly effective and healthy for all and will leave you with a refreshed mouth. Unfortunately, the effects don't last overnight to provide long-term fresh breath.

Tongue Cleaners: very healthy to use just like the above technique. Most germs are found on the back 1/3 of the tongue. Tongue cleaners are healthy to use but the effects don't last.
Mouthwashes: have been around for over 100 years. They can be useful in eliminating germs and bacteria in the mouth and on the gums as well as rinsing the teeth to remove food particles. They only provide short-term results.
The problem with mouthwashes is that their effectiveness can be placed into groups.
GROUP 1: These were developed as germ killers. Of course, we've all heard about that product that "kills the germs that cause bad breath." This type of mouthwash does kill some of the germs but not all. The germs grow back quickly, so they continue to produce those foul-smelling bad breath gases. Germ killers do not eliminate bad breath but simply attempt to cover it up with short-term effectiveness.
GROUP 2: This group is odor eliminators, mostly oxidizers. They do eliminate bad breath when rinsed in the mouth. But they don't do anything to the germs to stop them from producing new bad breath so their effectiveness for working is even shorter term than GROUP 1.
HOW CAN YOU GET RID OF BAD BREATH?
Now that you know you have bad breath, you would want to know how to get rid of it. The most effective way is to do just what you've been told to do since you were a child.
Brush and floss your teeth twice a day! Brush your tongue, too. If you wear dentures, be sure to remove them at night and clean thoroughly before placing them back in your mouth the next morning. Gargle with a germ killing mouthwash to slow the reproduction of bacteria in the mouth and on the tongue. Have regular checkups to allow your dentist to find any problems in advance like periodontal (gum) disease, dry mouth or other disorders that may be the cause of your bad breath. This is a critical step to maintaining a healthy mouth and body.
The end results will be sweeter smelling breath plus it never hurts to be ready with kissable breath in case you run into Brad, Angelina or even the Queen.

Can You Stop Your Child From Grinding Their Teeth?

by Brian Somtok

Have you ever crept into your kid's room during the night expecting the sweet sounds of slumber and instead been greeted by the sound of grinding teeth? Grinding teeth, or Bruxism as it is called, most frequently occurs during sleep at night. Millions of people from all over the world suffer from it and have been searching for ways to stop teeth grinding.

Teeth grinding in toddlers will often go away on its own as the child gets older and used to having teeth. While teeth grinding in adults is usually a sign of stress, in children it is probably more of a habit than anything else. Teeth grinding creates wear on the tooth enamel which causes cracking and sometimes chipping in the teeth. Grinding your teeth while asleep is more of a problem than when you are awake since most people grind their teeth much harder while sleeping.
To completely stop grinding your teeth you need to do exercises and change parts of your diet. For example, you can purchase countless different mouth guards available in the market today, but they do NOT help stop tooth grinding permanently. The mouth guards just protect the teeth from further damage but do little to solve the problem. Someone who grinds their teeth every night may experience jaw disorders, damaged teeth, and headaches all because of their bruxism. Dentists will never tell you how to cure bruxism or stop teeth grinding because dentists and the mouth guard businesses would suffer.

Teeth can become sensitive, painful, and loose after they have been worn down or cracked by the grinding. The amount of bite pressure placed on grinding teeth causes the teeth and existing fillings to crack. Lots of kids who grind their teeth aren't even aware of it, so it's often siblings or parents who identify the problem. Dentists should also be aware of it as they are the ones who would see the grinding damage.

In most cases, bruxism is a minor condition that poses no real health threat to a child. In addition to grinding teeth, people with bruxism also may bite their fingernails, pencils and chew the inside of their cheek. While the exact cause is not known, bruxism is clearly associated with stress and certain personality types. Like daytime teeth clenching, bruxism is often considered to be stress-related.

Restore Your Healthy Smile

by Lauren Knight

Losing your teeth, whether due to disease, decay, or injury can be devastating. Luckily, there are cosmetic dentistry procedures that can help restore your natural, healthy smile! Dental implants are one way that you can replace missing teeth.
Receiving dental implants means placing titanium screws into the jawbone, and attaching crowns, bridgework, or dentures in place of the missing tooth/teeth. Not only do these replacements feel natural to you, but these implants and replacements look completely natural to others. No one would ever know they were not your own teeth!
Prior to having dental implants, a complete assessment of your jaw and bone structure is necessary. If your bone structure is not adequate, there are procedures that can be performed to make the bone strong enough to hold the implant devices. These procedures can extend the total time it takes to get the implants, but it's well worth the wait.

Many patients in the UK are seeking their dental care abroad, because of the huge savings they find. The process of having dental implants is perfect to combine with a holiday. Have your initial evaluation in London, and travel to Budapest for your treatment. The procedures are relatively painless, so in between your appointments you will be able to fully enjoy a variety of leisure activities. Dental Care London can help you along every step of the way, organizing your consultation, treatment, and aftercare. The entire process of having dental implants may require multiple visits over an extended period of time; this will be determined at your initial assessment, and prior to the start of your treatment. Think of it as a way to have more than one opportunity to enjoy the many offerings of beautiful Budapest!

If you've been thinking about ways to restore your healthy smile, start checking into having dental implants today. More information about dental implants can be found at http://dentalcarelondon.com/pages.php?id=33

The Top Ten Best Ways to Keep Your Children Cavity Free

by Lawrence Spindel

I believe that keeping your child's teeth free decay is an invaluable gift a parent can give their children. It helps in their development of a positive self image and teaches them first hand the importance taking care one self. This article presents ten simple steps a parent can take to keep their children teeth free of decay.
Even at a very early age, it's best to supervise your children's brushing and have them use a rechargeable Braun electric Toothbrush (in my opinion the best one on the market). This brush is easy to use effectively and children seem to like it.
Try to avoid letting your child snack on sugary foods or even foods high in carbohydrates (carbohydrates are easy to break down to sugar). Sweets should be consumed if possible during or at the end of a meal as desert and shouldn't bathe the teeth all day long. It always best if you follow the same dietary habits you ask your children to follow since children imitate their parents!
Praise your child after brushing or tell them how proud you are of them when they eat "healthy snacks". Positive reinforcement is the best way to encourage your children in their efforts. Who doesn't want to hear how good a job they are doing?
It's best to have your child visit their dentist twice per year to have their teeth examined, cleaned and to receive oral hygiene coaching. Kids will develop a healthy attitude toward preventive dental care and most, if not all, of their visits will be pleasant.
Sealants should be placed in the grooved occlusal surfaces of all back teeth with in six months of their eruption. These fissured surfaces are the areas that kids are especially prone to decay and sealants are probably the best way to prevent them from developing cavities.

Have your child drink properly fluoridated water (one part per million) starting from and early age (prior to three) Most bottled water is not fluoridated, and probably the best source of fluoride is filtered tap water and you will save money too.
Limit soda consumption. Carbonated soda is especially bad for teeth.
When you do break down and let them have a sugary snack, ask them to brush their teeth afterwards. It is best not to let the sugar linger in the mouth for hours at a time.
If possible don't use the TV as a babysitter, since it is only natural that kids watching TV for long periods will want to snack. If they are busy with activities they are less likely to crave sugary snacks.

Laser Teeth Whitening Industry Still Learning

by Jay Scott Edwards

Consumers looking for white teeth and a great smile have plenty of choice of treatments ranging from DIY kits to white strips which are not sold in the UK to more expensive treatments like laser teeth whitening and the treatments like the dentists offer.
The teeth whitening industry has grown on the back of the beauty industry which has also seen massive growth over the five years. Consumers are wanting to look great and feel good about themselves and this has been caused by stars and celebrities features in glossy magazines, films and TV shows. Everyone then feels like they should look like the stars and this results in self indigence.
Laser teeth whitening is becoming popular because of the fact it is a costs effective treatment that is undertaken in less than one hour and in many cases whitens the teeth by 4-6 shades.
Teeth whitening is not for everyone and professional teeth whitening should never whiten anyone's teeth that require dental work and this is why a pre consultation is undertaken to ensure this is achieved.
The teeth whitening industry is still evolving as learnings are made and then adapted based on customer feedback which is how many new industries operate in the early days.

Managing the customers expectations is probably the biggest area that needs to happen as some customers will expect to have white teeth like Britney Spears or Simon Cowell but this simply is unlikely to happen and most people's teeth will get whiter but only as far as their natural colour will allow. To get white bright teeth like the stars the only way is to have veneers by the dentist and these can cost a fortune and this is why laser teeth whitening is now considered a real alternative when considering teeth whitening.

Laser teeth whitening available from The White Teeth Company - Laser teeth whitening professionals or visit http://www.whiteteethcompany.co.uk/affiliates.html if you are a salon looking to offer teeth whitening.

Maximizing the Effects of Your Tooth Whitening Procedure

by Patricia Woloch

You've completed your Zoom! tooth whitening treatment or undergone a home whitening procedure and now have a sparkling smile that turns heads. So how do you keep it that way? Here are some tips to help you keep your newly restored smile as bright as can be.
Brush and Floss Regularly
Immediately following the bleach treatment, your teeth will be their whitest and brightest and begin to fade slowly throughout the year. In order to keep your teeth looking their best, we recommend you floss and brush twice daily with Zoom! Whitening Toothpaste.
Touch-up
If you begin to notice discolorations, you should occasionally touch-up with Zoom! Weekender or Nite White Gel. The gels and trays in this take-home kit can be used whenever you notice a discoloration. These are professional formula products designed specifically to keep your teeth their brightest. The kit is only available only through your dental professional.
One touch-up a year will generally maintain a whiter, appealing smile that turns heads.

After that, a visit to your dentist to professionally touch-up your smile is recommended once every six months or so. However, everybody's results will vary and will depend on individual habits.
Keep Stain-Causing Substances to a Minimum
For example, if you regularly expose your teeth to staining factors, your results will likely fade faster. If you want your whitening procedure to last as long as possible, you should keep the following to a minimum:
• Coffee
• Tea
• Red wine
• Dark-colored soda
• Smoke from cigarettes and cigars
• Chewing tobacco.

Teeth Grinding, Jaw Clenching, And TMJ Disorders

by Budda Oliver

TMJ refers to the tempromandibular joints, which are the joints of the jaw that connect the lower jaw bone (mandible) to the skull. These joints allow us to open and close our mouths, chew our food, and speak to one another (or ourselves). A TMJ disorder is any condition which interferes with these actions. Teeth grinding, teeth and jaw clenching, and locked jaw are some examples of conditions which relate to TMJ disorders.
They are sometimes difficult to diagnose, as there are many different causes for these conditions. TMJ disorders are most commonly caused by muscle tension in the jaw, perhaps due to increased stress and anxiety, jaw clenching, teeth grinding, or excessive chewing. Some other habits may be linked to TMJ disorders, such as consistently sleeping on one side of the jaw, chewing a lot of gum, or overextension of the jaw.
Other causes of TMJ disorders may be misaligned jaw joints or teeth, either due to structural problems with the jaw or teeth (such as a birth defect or scar tissue), or due to an injury to the jaw or surrounding areas. Other conditions such as arthritis may also lead to TMJ disorders.
If left untreated, these disorders can lead to headaches, earaches, joint and muscle pain (especially in the face, neck, and shoulders), loss of sleep, locked jaw, difficulty opening and closing the mouth, a clicking sound in the jaw, and/or limited movement of the head and neck.

Many people experience some of these problems and, most of the time, minor problems with the TMJ will correct themselves over time. They may reappear down the road, but the condition will not normally get any worse. However, some people suffer chronically from TMJ disorders, and must receive some type of treatment to deal with the pain and discomfort they may experience.
One of the best treatment options for teeth grinding, clenching, and other TMJ disorders are the use of dental mouth guards or splints. These custom-made guards are provided by your dentist and are used to relieve tension on the jaw during sleep. They help prevent teeth grinding and, if used regularly, can help curtail these nocturnal habits. Two common types of these guards are full upper mouth guards, which fit over all of the upper teeth, or NTIs, which are worn around only the top front teeth and have a high success rate stopping clenching.
Other methods to help treat TMJ disorders are available, and the best method really depends on the exact cause/s of the disorder. If high stress or anxiety levels are to blame, then stress management techniques may be the best line of defense. If the problem is due to structural problems with the teeth or jaw, then dental adjustments may bring these problems to an end. No matter what the cause, applying soothing heat to the area is often helpful, as well.
Consult your dentist to find out what steps can be taken to help treat any TMJ disorders you may be suffering from.

If you look in the mirror and notice that your "pearly whites" aren't so pearly, you may wondering about the latest tooth whitening methods that are available. How do they work, and what is the cost? Do they actually make your teeth look whiter, and if so, how much?
Toothpastes
Using special toothpastes is one of the most common teeth whitening methods there is. There are many whitening toothpastes available, and many do quite a good job when it comes to just general buildup or discoloration. These pastes typically contain a bleaching solution and peroxide that are specifically designed for the enamel of teeth. These tooth whitening methods are typically very safe but not always as effective as one would want.
Gels and Strips
Over the counter gels and strips are other common teeth whitening methods there are. These are usually available at any pharmacy or retailer. These methods usually contain a small amount of bleach or peroxide that helps to restore the brightness of your teeth.
Many of these solutions are placed in a mouthguard that you wear overnight or for a certain number of hours per day. Some of these are strips that have a solution on them already and which you place over your teeth once or twice a day. Some need to then be removed while others simply dissolve.

These methods are typically much more effective than any other home treatments, however, there are some concerns you should consider. For one, your teeth may become more sensitive when you're using these products. The tissue in your mouth may also become irritated from the mouth guard or from the bleaching solution you're using. Some also have a very unpleasant taste this is hard to get rid of.
For most however these side effects are very mild and go away once the tooth whitening methods are done.
Tooth Whitening Methods In Your Dentist's Office
Many dentists have a variety of teeth whitening methods that they can offer. Most of these are just more concentrated forms of the home systems. Most involve a special cover that is put over your soft tissue and then a special bleach solution is applied to the teeth. These procedures typically take around 30 minutes to an hour, and you may need more than one procedure depending upon the actual discoloration of your teeth. Some tooth whitening methods use lasers to increase the effectiveness of the bleaching solutions, however, there are no laser treatments that currently have the American Dental Association's seal of approval.
If you are interested in any of these teeth whitening methods, you may want to start with a basic home treatment. And if these do not give you the desired effect, then you can speak with your dentist about more progressive treatment options.

Tooth Whitening is a process designed to whiten and brighten teeth.

Dental Mouth Guards and Splints

by Budda Oliver

Many people suffer from nocturnal grinding of the teeth, clenching of the jaw, and other TMJ disorders. TMJ stands for tempromandibular joints, which are the joints of the jaw that connect the mandible (the lower jaw bone) to the skull.
Teeth grinding, otherwise known as bruxism, can be caused by stress, hyper-activeness, or a misalignment of the teeth or jaw. Teeth grinding and jaw clenching can cause varying degrees of pain and discomfort. These habits can also weaken teeth and cause chipping and wearing. If left untreated, teeth grinding can lead to an eventual breakdown of the teeth, jaw pain, headaches, loss of sleep, and other TMJ disorders.
Dental mouth guards and splints can relieve pain, discomfort, and wear caused by teeth grinding and jaw clenching. Specialty mouth guards can also be corrective, conditioning the body to stop grinding the teeth or clenching the jaw. These mouth guards are to be worn at night, during sleep to prevent the pain and discomfort associated with nocturnal bruxism.

One of the most common types of dental mouth guards being used today is the full upper mouth guard/splint. This therapeutic devise is constructed of a specialty material and can be constructed to your mouth's exact specifications by your dentist. Most commonly, the mouth guard fits over all of the upper teeth, but can also be fashioned for the lower set of teeth, should that be necessary, while providing the same results. The full upper mouth guard, sometimes called a bite plate, holds the jaw in a more comfortable position during sleep, reducing jaw clenching and teeth grinding.
The NTI is another type of mouth splint that may be used to treat jaw clenching, teeth grinding, and other TMJ disorders. Unlike the full upper mouth guard, which covers all of the upper teeth, the NTI is worn only around the top front teeth. These devices are also custom fit to your mouth's specifications, and can reduce clenching up to 66%.
While not dangerous, teeth grinding and clenching can cause problems if not properly treated. If the cause of these habits is due to structural problems with the jaw or teeth, then the use of a dental mouth guard or splint is one of the best ways to correct the problem. While sleeping, these bite plates will cause the jaw to settle into a more comfortable position, thereby eliminating the body's unconscious desire to grind the teeth or clench the jaw. Consult your dentist to see if the use of a mouth guard can help you.

Curing Bad Breath

by Bob Gill

It is estimated that one in four people suffers from bad breath. Bad breath, known as halitosis, needs to be treated properly so that there is no interference with your interaction with others.
Most causes of bad breath can be traced to oral bacteria living in the mouth. The back of the tongue is a typical breeding ground for bacteria, and you can expect further problems when food particles get lodged between the teeth or in the gum line.
Getting rid of the bacteria in the mouth is the main idea behind curing bad breath. Regular brushing of teeth and the gum line will greatly assist in ridding your mouth of bacteria, with particular emphasis on scraping the tongue as this is where much bad breath originates.
Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly will dislodge bacteria - a necessity as mouthwash or chewing gum doesn't remove bacteria, they only mask the bad breath temporarily.
Many people believe that good oral hygiene is the solution for curing bad breath and will prevent other problems as well. Old food particles, yeast and plaque will all contribute to bad breath and dental problems if left undressed.

There are medical conditions that can cause halitosis. Sometimes the side effect of medication causes bad breath. Doctors are aware that bad breath is not always a matter of poor hygiene and they can quickly determine the cause and offer suggestions for, not necessarily curing bad breath, but at least controlling it to a certain extent.
A high protein diet is favored by body builders and some dieters. Unfortunately this diet leads to a build up of ketones in the blood, and some ketones leave the body through the mouth as bad breath.
It may be necessary to add some healthy carbohydrates to the high protein diet in an effort to temper body odours. Working in the hot sun or spending time in saunas may also encourage accumulated ketones to be released through skin pores as alternative body exits. Drinking plenty of water also will assist ketones to leave the body through urine and will dilute concentrations within the mouth at the same time.
Persistent bad breath may indicate an undiagnosed medical problem. A poorly managed diabetic or people with insufficient insulin production may have a build up of ketones in the blood, which may quickly lead to a life threatening condition. Persistent halitosis demands expert attention.
There is a relatively new product line developed by a doctor that is one of the more popular for curing bad breath and it is available online. Bear in mind, though, that any product for bad breath will work best when combined with regular brushing of teeth and tongue.

Causes of Bad Breath

by Luka Ce

Halitosis or bad breath can be a really awkward thing. Imagine how you feel if someone with really bad breath talks to you from very close without even knowing how bad his breath is. Unfortunately people aren't usually responsible for their bad breath. There are many causes of bad breath like sinus infections, post nasal drainage, tonsilar infections or tonsiloliths, lung diseases, kidney diseases,l diseases, blood disorders, diabetes, menstruation, carcinomas, certain foods and of course other dental causes like extensive dental decay, gum disease, oral infections or abscesses, oral cancers, dry mouth condition and many medicines which can contribute to bad breath.

If you don't know if your breath smells bad, you can test it easily. One of the ways is to lick the back of your hand and let it dry for few seconds. Now smell it, does it stink ? Another easy test which doesn't work that good is placing your hand in front of your mouth and making your breath go to the nose. The problem is that our nose has the ability to adjust to odor and that is why you may not smell it, because you have been smelling it for the whole time. The test which also works good is with the toothbrush, just brush your teeth for few seconds without placing the toothpaste on it. Now smell the toothbrush.
There are many different ways to treat bad breath. The temporary ones are with gums without any sugar, peppermints... The most important thing of course is good mouth hygene. You should always brush your teeth and your tongue which is one of the main sources of bacteria in your mouth.

Teeth Whitening Might Work To Help Quit Smoking

by Jay Scott Edwards

In this article we are not saying that teeth whitening is one of the next fads to help you quit smoking but customers who have had laser teeth whitening treatment and see the benefits of having white teeth then think twice about continuing their smoking habit.
Laser teeth whitening is undertaken in salons where clients have a gum dam applied to protect their gums and then a stain removing gel is applied before the laser light is activated. The gel then gains deep in to the enamel removing the staining and this is all done just under one hour. Typically the teeth are lightened by 6-8 shades and the treatment can last up to 18 months depending on how and when the staining that caused the problem is then minimized otherwise the benefit is decreased.

Nicotine is not the only bad habit to cause staining to the enamel but caffeine, red wine, gravy and sauces will also stain the teeth but like many things it will depend on the frequency of usage but with such a simple and time effective treatment available for your teeth then no need to worry. Laser teeth whitening is also known as zoom whitening which is a commonly used name in the USA and even the Americans have developed Zoom 2 teeth whitening which is essentially the same but early adopters will want to try new names and ideas.
The name aside laser teeth whitening is a huge growth industry and with added benefits like helping clients to quit smoking then no wonder customers are prepared to travel to get the treatment.
